Elkton-Franklin Daniel Sturgeon, 96, of Elkton, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at his home.Mr. Sturgeon was born April 9, 1921 in Salem, a son of the late Thomas ans Leona (Borton) Sturgeon.Frank graduated from Greenford High School. He worked several jobs before enlisting in the Army Air Corp, where he served 3 years, 5 months, and 23 days with the 455th Bomb Squadron during WW II. During this time, he earned the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 6 Bronze Stars. Following the war, he went to Ohio University on the G.I. Bill. He married Mary Elizabeth Cox on July 12, 1947 and they were married for 65 years.Frank taught in the Beaver Local School District, beginning his career at Elkton and retiring after 39 years from the high school. He taught government and history. His love of history and politics led him in many directions. He collected political buttons, arrowheads, antiques, postcards, coins, and stamps. Frank was a democratic committeeman and the Elkrun Township clerk for 28 years. He was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW, and served as a board member for the Credit Union for many years. Frank was also the person who put the American flags on Veteran's graves at all of Elkrun Township cemeteries up until a few years ago.Following his retirement from education, Frank expanded his love of nature (he always had a beautiful garden) by taking a class in floral arranging at the vocational school. He then worked at Flora's Flower shop, arranging flowers and delivering arrangements around the county. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Jo (Louis) Sims of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Gwen (Frank) Francis of Highlandtown; son, George Franklin (Dianne) Sturgeon of Atwater, Ohio; brother, Walter (Trish) Sturgeon of East Palestine; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and 3 nieces and a nephew.In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his wife; brother, Myron Sturgeon; sister, Virginia Worman; niece, Harriet Warren; and son, Thomas Albert Sturgeon.The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services and burial with full military honors will be held at 11am, Thursday at the Kemble Cemetery in Elkton, State Route 154, with the Reverend Tanta Luckhardt-Hendricks officiating. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Tri State Area Tuition Mission Foundation, P.O.
