Calvin Carney Obituary

West Point-Calvin "Cal" Carney, 91, of State Route 518, passed away peacefully at 7:25pm, Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Assumption Village in North Lima.Mr. Carney was born January 16, 1926 in West Point, a son of the late Joseph O. and Mary (Friedrich) Carney, and had lived in West Point his whole life.A 1943 graduate of Lisbon David Anderson High School, Cal served proudly served our country as a Master Sergeant in the U.S Army during WWII. He was a member of Patton's Third Army at the "Battle of the Bulge". He served with the 345 Regiment, 87th Infantry Division as a member of the machine gun squad. For his service, he received a Commendation Ribbon for exceptional meritorious performance as a noncommissioned officer in charge of the outgoing records section, officer's separation branch, 1262nd SCU Personnel Center.Following the war, he returned home to take over the family business, Carney's Gas Service, in West Point, which he owned and operated for many years.Cal was a member of St. Agatha's Catholic Church; was a founding member of the West Point Volunteer Fire department, where he served for 24 years; served 8 years as a Madison Township Trustee; served 14 years on the board of directors for the Buckeye Water District; was a member of the West Point Grange; SNPJ Lodge #358; life member of the VFW; and the American Legion Post #275.His wife, Dorothy Theresa (Roslonski) Carney, whom he married April 28, 1946, preceded him in death March 26, 2015. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Nettie Powell, Joe Carney, and Sarah Murry; and by his infant daughter, Rose Mary Carney.Cal leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter, Colleen Ingram and her husband, Eric of Rogers; his son, Kevin Carney and his wife, Teresa of West Point; his grandsons, Clinton Paul Carney and his wife, Alica, and Clayton Paul Carney; his great granddaughter, Brooke Adrienne Carney; as well as many nieces and nephews.Private visitation and funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home, a fireman's last alarm service was also presented by members of the West Point Volunteer Fire Department. He was laid to rest Monday morning at the Lisbon Cemetery, where full military honors were accorded by the Salem Honor Guard.Cal suggested that memorial contributions be made in his memory, to his grandson, Clinton Paul Carney, P.O. Box 511, Lisbon, Ohio 44432, to help with Clinton's ongoing medical expenses.The family would like to extend their gratitude and sincere appreciation to all of the staff of Salem Regional Medical Center, Assumption Village and Hospice of the Valley for their kindness.
