Jerry Owens Obituary

Kensington- Jerry Wayne Owens, 75, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife, Georgianna.  Born January 17, 1950 in Covington, Kentucky, he was the cherished son of Zanda (Ridener) Owens of Florence, Kentucky, and the late James Owens.

Jerry was a lifelong learner who dedicated himself to furthering his education.  He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Morehead State University.  He then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education, Guidance, and Counseling from Xavier University, followed by a second Master’s Degree in Personnel Management from Northern Kentucky University. In addition to his graduate work, Jerry pursued Doctoral studies in Educational Leadership at the University of Kentucky, showcasing his commitment to education while balancing a demanding career.

Jerry devoted his career to public service, demonstrating a deep commitment to his community and helping others.  He began his professional journey with CSX as a train operator in Silver Grove, Kentucky, before advancing to a Regional Supervisor role in Pittsburgh.  Later, Jerry transitioned into public service as a Kentucky Parole Officer in Kenton County, where he worked to support and guide individuals in need.

Jerry’s passion for education led him to a fulfilling career in teaching and school administration.  He started as a 6th grade teacher in the Covington Independent Schools and later served as Principal of Owen County High School.  His leadership expanded to Gallatin County High School, where he served as both Principal and Assistant Principal.  Jerry’s dedication to shaping the future of students continued as he became the Superintendent of the Edison Local School District, a role that allowed him to make a lasting impact on the community.

In addition to his educational roles, Jerry was passionate about coaching and mentoring youth, having coached baseball, wrestling, and soccer at various levels.  His legacy as a public servant is defined by his years of service, dedication to others, and the positive influence he had on countless individuals.

Outside of his professional career, Jerry was a man of many talents and interests.  He was a dedicated and supportive member of his community, a former Mason, and a visitor of the Friends Church.  He will be lovingly remembered as a formidable Euchre player, a cow whisperer, a stock market aficionado, and, most of all, a doting and loving papa to his grandchildren.  Jerry’s deep love for his family and the joy he took in being with them was one of the most defining aspects of his life.

In his retirement, Jerry embraced a new chapter full of excitement and adventure.  He fulfilled a long-held dream of purchasing a farm, where he became a proud farmer, raising a herd of Black Angus cattle.  This new lifestyle brought him immense joy and satisfaction, as he poured his heart into tending the land and caring for his animals.  Jerry’s love for the farm life allowed him to connect with nature in a way that brought him peace and purpose.  Whether it was the thrill of working with his cattle or the quiet satisfaction of his daily routines, Jerry truly found happiness in this next phase of life, making retirement both rewarding and fulfilling.

Jerry was a man of deep faith and strong moral conviction.  His life a testament to the values of kindness, integrity, and service to others, reflecting his strong relationship with God.  Jerry’s actions spoke to his godly nature-whether through his unwavering support of his family and friends, his dedication to public service, or his role as a mentor to others.  His faith guided his decisions and provided him with strength throughout his life, leaving a lasting legacy of love and devotion to those around him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Georgianna (Brown) Owens, whom he married August 11, 1973; his sons, John (Jera) Owens of Louisville, KY and Jim (Abby) Owens of Northern, KY; his sister, Dale (Tom) Due of Northern, KY; his brother-in-law, Steve Tichenor of Northern, KY; his cherished grandchildren, Evan, Sophia, William, and Gwen; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
