Steve Abel

Hanoverton- Francis Stephen “Steve” Abel, Jr., 39, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 11, 2025 in the emergency room at Salem Regional Medical Center.

Steve was born July 13, 1985 in West Virginia, the son of Frank and Rebecca (Bodemann) Abel, and had worked for HSH Drywall Company, owned by Erik Liber, who was more a brother than a boss.

Steve was a hardworking family man and loved all sports, especially the Cleveland Guardians.  He shared his love of sports to many, as he coached United Youth baseball.  Steve coordinated Abelweenfest for 20 years.  He loved to talk and to know him was to love him.  He will be sadly missed by all of his lifelong friends, of which there are too many to mention.

In addition to his parents, Steve is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Sheena (Fortune) Abel, whom he married September 29, 2012; daughters, Madi and Paityn and sons, Dante (Bekka) and Paxton , all of Hanoverton; sisters, Miranda (Ronnie) Abel of Salem, sister-in-law, Kayla (Pete) Anderson of Salem; father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Beverly Fortune of Leetonia; grandmother, Dorothy Bodemann; nieces and nephew, Kyra, Aubree, and Colton; and many more aunts, uncles and cousins.

Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Katherine Abel; and grandfather, Leonard Bodemann.  

Funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, January 17, 2025 at the Winona Friends Church, 4687 Whinnery Rd, Salem, OH 44460, with Pastor Dan Hepner officiating.  Private burial will follow at the Lisbon Cemetery.

The family will receive friends and family from 5pm to 8pm Thursday at the church and also from 10am until the time of services on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made in Steve’s memory to the United Scholarship Fund, 8143 St. Rt. 9, Hanoverton, Ohio 44423.
